Dysautonomia

Dysautonomia is a simplified way to describe multiple conditions which impact brain regions responsible for proper bodily control. They may result in disruptions of autonomic functions which control such as blood pressure, breathing, heart rate, digestion, pain control, and/or temperature regulation.

Some conditions which are considered dysautonomia are Orthostatic Intolerance; Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS); Neurocardiogenic Syncope (NCS); Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia (IST). Dysautonomia secondary to infection or autoimmunity; Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

Symptoms commonly present as:

  • faint upon standing or changing position 

  • lightheadedness, or dizziness

  • fatigue

  • shortness of breath

  • headaches/migraines

  • heart rate and blood pressure changes

  • visual disturbances 

  • decreased pain tolerance
